I searched your blog because I’m very skeptical of the “Your Baby Can Read” program advertized on TV a lot lately. I’m a participant on the Skeptalk (email discussion list for fans of the Skeptoid podcast). Today a thread emerged on this topic. It seems even more ridiculous than the Baby Mozart craze a few years back. It claims to teach toddlers to read actual words before they are even verbal!
Do you have a review of this product and I’m just not finding it?
If not, would you consider evaluating this program? I hear it’s $250! A lot more expensive than a Mozart CD.

I haven’t heard too much about this, but I’m betting a few of our regulars might have an opinion.

Laura, you might be interested in reading our blog post written by David Elkind PhD, about Teaching Babies to Read, which addresses these early learning programs: http://www.justaskbaby.com/blogs/professor-elkind/teaching-babies-to-read

This is a fine list, but any recommendations on pregnancy and baby books?

Congratulations!
I recommend “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child” by Dr. Weissbluth, but that’s anecdotal from personal experience. And though I haven’t read it, I would recommend Dr. Ari Brown’s “Baby 411: Clear Answers and Smart Advice for Your Baby’s First Year”. Dr. Brown is pro-vaccine and her perspectives are science-based, but obviously you’ll want to decide for yourself.

Thank you!
Baby 411 is purchased along with Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth.
Judging from my experience with friends and family I’m entering a phase of life where science, reason and logic seems to be the exceptions and not the rules…
